Hungry For A New World

As you may know, Michaela and I have been working with other United Church Youth group leaders to plan a spring overnight event that would be engaging and fun for youth.  We’ve done it!!  The date is May 25th and 26th.

Please read through the attached poster.  If you would like to register, please see me for a registration form. This is a free event, the Toronto Southeast Presbytery has provided funds to help make this happen.  Please note that the event will take place at 20 Glebe Road – Glebe United Church (close to Yonge and Davisville).

On the Friday night there will be a guest speaker from KAIROS coming to speak on Aboriginal rights. Here is a link to KAIROS so you can check it out: http://www.kairoscanada.org/

Note that if you can attend the Friday night, but not the Saturday, that’s fine….and visa versa.

I look forward to hearing back from you.

Peace, Tanya

Dream the Impossible Dream Concert

Sing into Summer – Dream the Impossible

A fund-raising concert for Leaside United Church

Featuring singing sensation, Brian Roman

With the Chancel and Junior Choirs singing music from Broadway,  Hollywood and Beyond.

Under the direction of Sharon L. Beckstead, Music Director

Brian is in high demand and has performed in a variety of venues.  Interestingly he embarked upon his path to becoming a professional singer at 42 years of age – not typically the time when people wind up for a new and ambitious career.  Brian’s voice, charm and charisma have managed to capture the imagination and devotion of a broad audience.  Brian’s repertoire includes songs from Sinatra, Elvis, Tom Jones, Bobby Daren, Dean Martin, Englebert Humperdinck, Neil Diamond, Paul Anka, Sammy Davis Jr. and many others, along with and original or two.  His performance is comprised not of impressions but rather stellar performances of some great classics.    Brian has just completed his third CD, As Long as I have Music.

Thursday, June 7 at 7:30 pm

Wine and Cheese Reception to follow the concert

Leaside United Church, 822 Millwood Road, Toronto, ON  M4G 1W4, 416-425-1253, www.leasideunited.org

Godly Play Introductory Workshop

Saturday March 3rd – 9am to 4pm

Location:  Leaside United Church 822 Millwood Rd.  (in the Hearth Room)

Who should come and Why?

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn what Godly Play is all about.  Tanya Wiles-Bell has been implementing Godly Play into the Sunday morning children’s program for over a year and thought that this would be a wonderful opportunity for parents and congregation members to come and experience worship “Godly Play” style.

What is Godly Play?

Godly Play is a creative and imaginative approach to faith formation that has its roots in the work of Maria Montessori.  It was created by Jerome Berryman, an Anglican priest, about 30 years ago and has been used and developed over time by people around the world as a way of both teaching and being with children.  Godly Play uses symbols, beautifully crafted materials, rituals, and silence as well as stories to convey biblical traditions and practices of the Christian church.

Godly Play recognizes that children already know and experience God but may not have the language or opportunity to talk about and explore their experiences, thoughts, questions, and feelings.  Godly Play provides children an occasion not just to learn about God’s love, but to discover God’s love in the midst of a supportive community and environment.  It helps children learn Bible stories and religious language and to use them to make meaning.

What will happen at the Workshop?

  • You will experience Godly Play stories and wondering questions.
  • You will learn about the values inherent in Godly Play.
  • You will discover how Godly Play is used with children.
  • You will have the opportunity to work with the story materials and practice storytelling.

Who is leading the workshop?

Amy Crawford is accredited as a teacher and trainer of Godly Play.  She has been using Godly Play in church settings for 13 years.  Amy lives inTorontoand works as the Program Minister for Children, Young Teens, and Youth at the General Council Office of The United Church of Canada.

No need to register ahead of time…just show up on Saturday morning, dressed comfortably, and ready for an incredible worship experience!

A Class Divided – LUC Youth Group

On Sunday February 5th, 2012, the Youth Group viewed the documentary “A Class Divided”

A Class Divided

The documentary featured an Iowa schoolteacher who, on the day after Martin Luther King Jr. was murdered in 1968, gave her third-grade students a first-hand experience in the meaning of discrimination by dividing her class into two groups, blue and brown eyes.

Although I had viewed this documentary three times before last night, I find myself still thinking about it today.

I am particularly struck with the image of the boy trying to destroy the “collar” marking him.

I’m wondering if there are any images still speaking to you today?

I invite you to post your reactions to this powerful piece here on this blog.

Peace,

Tanya
