Leaside United Church sends a huge thank you to the cast and crew for the spectacular presentation of Papa Panov’s Special Christmas. It left us with a wonderful feeling of hope and charity. Special thanks goes to Natalie Jahn and Mary Murrill for coordinating an excellent production!

LUC Renovation Team Update

October 29, 2019

Leaside United Church Renovations

Important Timetable Update

The Renovation Committee met with the architect and construction lead today for an update on the complicated construction process that we at LUC are facing.

Here is the summary:

  • The upstairs kitchen servery is presently under construction and will be completed no sooner than late November. The crew is pushing as hard as they can, however, the process will take longer than expected. We toured the area today and saw that it will be spacious and outstanding when completed. It is not expected there will be a delay to any of the starting times of the planned construction schedules in the rest of the church.
  • Construction on the lower kitchen, halls, storage areas and gymnasium will commence on Monday November 4th, as scheduled.
  • Commencing March 2020, the Sanctuary, Offices and Office Entrance will be renovated.
  • The last phase of the process from April 2020 to early fall will be the outside entrance area and ramp, elevator as well as the exterior landscaping.

We greatly appreciate your patience. Major planning and coordination are required to keep our church and renters’ facilities operating as smoothly as possible.

We are very excited about the construction and eventual facilities that we and our community will be able to share.

Many thanks for your understanding.

Another “Miracle on Millwood” – Outreach update from the Awesome Sale

2019 was once again a very successful year for Leaside United’s Awesome Sales.  The 18 departments and their dedicated staff raised a significant total in the October Sale. Without a Furniture Department, this result is very pleasing indeed!

In the 26 years of LUC Awesome Sales, there has been significant revenue raised for the life and work of the church!!

We thank all donors for their terrific support.  Inventory is needed and it is amazing that in the few weeks between mid-August and the mid-Oct. sale date, we are blessed with such an abundance of goods.

We also thank all the awesome volunteers for their collective hours of dedicated service – some beginning several months before each sale and many serving as veteran volunteers for many years.

As many know, 1/4 of the Sales’ revenue goes directly for the Outreach work of our church.  This enables LUC to support and / or sponsor many groups such as: refugee families, Out-of-the Cold programs, food banks, shelters and other churches’ work.

Awesome Sales save tonnes of items from landfill through sales, reuse, repurposing or recycling.  Certain pre-sorted needed items are distributed through The Neighbourhood Office (TNO), via the Volunteer English Language Programme.  Also, winter clothing items are brought to the Out-of-the Cold at Eastminster United Church.  Cerebral Palsy picks up 60 to 80 percent of our unsold goods.  The rest is taken to either the Salvation Army Thrift Store or to Value Village.
