Give ‘n Go

Pancakes & Plaid

It was a sea of plaid from the kitchen helpers to the over 140 attendees at our Pancakes & Plaid Fundraiser for Camp Scugog on Shrove Tuesday this week.  Our special guests included Councillor Jon Burnside and our Member of Parliament Rob Oliphant. Both caught up with neighbours and got their fill of pancakes before #Lent.

Guest Speaker Emily Clark, the Development Coordinator at Camp Scugog and other staff members were on hand to answer any questions about the programs being offered at the Port Perry camp.  A special thank you to Bill Kinnear for sponsoring a special Adult Camp opportunity at Camp Scugog this summer through the Give & Go program.

Over 500 pancakes were consumed in the course of an hour.  We enjoyed litres of REAL maple syrup tapped in Ontario by Larry Allcorn and Graham Lute aka ‘Mosher Maple’.

Many thanks to all the volunteers who made this wonderful supper possible and all the guests who raised $1,230 for Camp Scugog!

Chez LUCY

Youth at Leaside United Church made a difference this past Sunday, raising approximately $800 for local and global projects that the church supports. The group, known as LUCY, (Leaside United Church Youth) sold 37 tickets to congregation and community members to enjoy a meal at Chez Lucy, a fine dining experience held at Leaside United. The group transformed the auditorium into a magical space and spent Sunday afternoon chopping, caramelizing, roasting, grilling and steaming. Guests arriving at 6 p.m. enjoyed a delectable three-course meal and were treated to top-notch service as well as a number of live acts performed by the youth. It was a spectacular evening filled with food, laughter and most importantly, community.

The Pie Makers of Presteign-Woodbine

As the days grow shorter and daylight savings rushes in upon us, we will soon be craving hearty food to comfort us through the chill of winter!  Relief is on it’s way!  On November 23rd, 2016 the Pie Makers of Presteign-Woodbine United Church will be sharing their wonderful Turkey and Shepherd’s Pies with us.  These delicious individually packaged pies will be for sale at our Give and Go Launch Party.

The Pie Makers of the Trillium Unit of the United Church Women (UCW) of Presteign-Woodbine United Church have a long tradition of baking these pies together for nearly 15 years.  Inspiration came from Cambridge Street United Church in Lindsay, Ontario after they were featured in the September 2002 issue of The Observer for raising $91,000 over years of fundraising through pie baking.

The Trillium Unit asked for their recipe and they willingly obliged.  Over the years, consumer taste buds, kitchen equipment and a group of dedicated, smart women have evolved the recipe into their own, eliminating MSG and using a special pastry recipe that works best with a KitchenAid.

The pies are approximately 4-5″ in diameter and weigh 300 grams/10.58 ounces.  No butter is added or a lot of spice since most consumers don’t want those extra ingredients . If you can handle the “extras”, these pies go great with ketchup, chili sauce or hot pepper jelly.
