Mary & Martha, and other news …

Georg Friedrich Stettner – Jesus at the home of Mary and Martha

How do we respond when we don’t feel that we are appreciated? When do you feel that your to do list is too long, and all of your good intentions for caring for others are unrecognized? How often do we allow what we need to do get in the way of how we need to be? This Sunday, our reading from Colossians explores the idea of God everywhere, which we remember every time we light the Christ candle together in worship. We will also hear Luke’s story of Mary and Martha, a good story for anyone with summer house (or cottage) guests.

This month, we have time to light candles for joys and sorrows, storytime with a book from Neil’s library, and a time for sharing our own personal reflections. The auditorium is a cool and casual space for our summer worship. We’ll continue worshiping in the auditorium until after the September long weekend, beginning each week with a gathering hymn sing.

Looking Ahead to August
In August, I’m beginning my pregnancy leave (returning January 2020), and we will have guest preachers joining us on Sundays. Rev. Rob Oliphant, one of our Voluntary Associate Ministers, will be leading the service on August 4. Rev. Alison Mock, who was a classmate of mine at Emmanuel College and is a thoughtful and engaging preacher, will be joining us on August 11 and 18. Then, Sheng-Ping Guo, an Emmanuel College PhD student, will share some of his reflections from his research into intercultural ministry on August 25. Starting in September, Rev. Warren McDougall will lead worship as he joins us part time during the fall.

This July, Jean Marie is away and I am available for any pastoral care needs. In August, please direct any Pastoral Care concerns to Jean Marie Suchora. James Lepard, our other Voluntary Associate Minister, is available for funerals and memorials.
