Children & Youth

Nursery

For infants and babies up to 2 years old the nursery is located just down the stairs from the choir rehearsal room.

We are pleased to offer excellent nursery care for our youngest members here at Leaside United. Julie Borges, our nursery care provider, has been caring for our wee ones for the past 4 years. You are welcome to drop down to the nursery before the service begins, or at any time during the service. Julie is often assisted by one or more of our youth, so there are always many hands help with cuddles and stories.

Introducing GODLY PLAY

Youth Group - LUCY (Leaside United Church Youth)

Sunday Morning Programs

Our Christian Education Director, Tanya Wiles-Bell oversees and organises our wide range of activities for your children as listed below.

Shooting Stars

Tanya Wiles-Bell

Tanya joined the Ministerial team at LUC in September of 2009 as Director of Christian Education after teaching pre-school and kindergarten for 22 years. Along with her family (John, Michaela, David and Adriana), Tanya has been an active member at Leaside United for over 20 years. With energy and enthusiasm to spare, she hopes to nurture growth in the area of family and youth ministry here at Leaside. Her primary goal is to make learning as “hands on” and experiential as possible, and she is excited to be introducing “Godly Play” to the Sunday school program this year. Tanya is a graduate of York University (BA, Sociology) and Centennial College (Early Childhood Education). In September 2010 she began part time studies at Emmanuel College, at the University of Toronto, working towards a master’s degree in Pastoral Studies.

Our toddler program is being headed up by Senior High School student Lauren Witte. Volunteering with Lauren will be Ciaran Thomas and Adriana Bell, both grade 8 students who enjoy the curiosity and energy of this age group. The Sparks curriculum will continue to be used with this group. Its colourful illustrations and age appropriate activities proved to be very successful last year.
stories.
For children ages 4 years old to 9 years

This year we are very excited to be introducing Godly Play to children ages 4 to 9 years old. Godly play is a method of sharing bible stories, and parables, in the traditional oral storytelling form. By “wondering” together about these stories, children are able to discover who God is for themselves, in a much more personal and meaningful way.
The main goal of Godly Play is to create a safe space for children - a place where their ideas, opinions, and gifts are deeply respected.

What will my child do in a Godly Play session?

We’ll sit in a circle to hear the story and wonder about it together. There follows time for activities using the many materials provided: painting, drawing, creating or just interacting with the storytelling objects used to tell the stories. Children use the process of creating to help explore their understanding, not to just produce work.

Exploration through the Arts

For Children ages 10 years old and up

The Sunday morning program for youth ages 10 and up is energetic, meaningful and hands on. Through a variety of arts and games, the youth will be exploring biblical themes, stories and current events, relating them to their own lives. Drama, music and visual arts are a few of the ways that we will explore these themes. The goal of this program is to encourage students to celebrate and support each other on their personal spiritual journeys.
