Christian Education

Spirit Alive

Book Circle

For many years, a group of people have met on a Sunday morning before church to discuss books they have read on religion and spirituality and continue to do so on a regular basis. The group meets roughly every 4 - 6 weeks to discuss the current book the group has chosen to read. Past reads have included "The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini, "Dark Age Ahead" by Jane Jacobs, "The Heart of Christianity" by Marcus Borg and "The Pagan Christ" by Tom Harpur, just to name a few.

UCW - Anniversary Unit

Earthworm's

At LUC the Earthworm’s group is concerned about peace and justice issues. Through reflection, education and action we do our best to work towards God’s vision of Shalom.

Earthworms are often an underestimated creature. Deep in the soil they extend their slithery bodies, breaking down vegetative matter, aerating and preparing the ground for seeds that will bring new life.

Dr. Ursula Franklin has said that working for peace is ‘earthworm’ work. It is work that requires patience, effort and long term commitment even when hope seems dim and successes are limited.

In the past, Earthworms has focussed on concerns and questions about water, using some of the resources produced by the United Church of Canada and the ecumenical group Kairos.

Your Ecological Footprint is important to the Earthworms and have been exploring what it means to live with respect in creation. The article in the November issue of Happenings on Measuring Your Ecological Footprint has been added to our website.

The Earthworms have written and published a Lenten Devotional Book on the theme of Living with Respect in Creation.

Spirit Alive meets to explore matters of spirituality, meditate, and reflect together. Save the second Saturday morning of the month to meet at 10:00 to noon. Spirit Alive begins with coffee, snacks and fellowship followed by a period of led meditation, music, quiet time and reflection to deepen the sense of the spiritual at the center of one's life. For more information contact Ruth Fawcett.
The U.C.W. at Leaside United Church is represented by the Anniversary unit which was formed the year of the 50th Anniversary of Leaside United Church and who meet regularly on the fourth Tuesday evening at 7:30pm from September to May excluding December. Eleanore Wynn is the co-ordinator of this unit. The group is composed of active women of all ages who participate in the planning of the monthly programs.
